Angola staged the biggest surprise of the inaugural round of Group D of the World Men's Handball Championship, winning against Qatar, the runner-up of the 2015 edition, by 24-23.

The Angolan national team has shown that they are able to stand up to any opponent in the 2019 World Men's Handball Championship. They faced the powerful Qatar in the opening round, but the formation led by Filipe Cruz was not intimidated and always had the game under control, by the time they reached the interval they were already winning by a score of 12-8.

Only once did Qatar get the lead on the scoreboard, 56 minutes in, with Angola alternating between winning and drawing (20-20 and 23-23), until in the final moments, at 60 minutes, they scored the goal that gave them the victory.

It should be noted that in the last edition of the competition, Angola lost all the games in which it participated.

In addition to the good collective performance, Angolan midfielder Romeu Hebo was voted the best player (MVP) of the match.
