Van Dijk comforted referee in tears at the end of Germany-Holland and explained why

The cameras caught Virgil Van Dijk hugging the referee of the Germany-Netherlands match, Ovidiu Hateganm, who was in tears at the end of the match.

The captain of the Dutch national team explained to the journalists that the referee received the news of his mother's death during the half time of the match. 'He just fell apart, because his mother passed away. I wished him strength and told him that he had done a good job. It's a small gesture but it might have helped him', said the Liverpool midfielder.
