European clubs promise to boycott the Club World Cup in case of expansion

The European Club Association (ECA) said none of the teams it represents will participate in the 2021 Club World Cup if the proposed expansion of the 24-team tournament is approved by the FIFA Council.

The ECA voiced concerns this week, in a letter sent to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, defending a change of the tournament, which is played annually in December by seven teams, about its expansion so that it becomes quadrennial, with a pilot edition in June and July of 2021.

The letter, seen by the Associated Press and published by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, was signed by directors of 14 leading European clubs, including ECA president Andrea Agnelli, who also heads Juventus.
