Brazil head coach Tite criticised the quality of the Arena do Gremio pitch after his team's 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Paraguay here on Thursday.

Tite joined Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in having publicly lambasted the Porto Alegre venue's uneven and patchy playing surface during the tournament.

"It's absurd to have a pitch like that at this level. Players required three touches just to control the ball," Tite said.

"My players asked me to mention it and I'm going to speak my mind. It's inconceivable that any stadium at this level has a pitch in that condition."

The venue's operator, Arena Porto-Alegrense, responded to criticism this week by promising to implant new strips of turf and use artificial light to promote growth on areas bereft of grass.

But Tite, who said he saw only five people working on the pitch during the week, said the measures had not been enough.

"Somebody has to be held accountable because everybody loses when the pitch is in that state," he said.

Arena do Gremio is scheduled to stage one more Copa America match - a semifinal on July 3.
