Footage posted on social media shows the intruders assaulting people with metal and wooden sticks inside the station in a clash that injured 45 passengers.

Hong Kong is in shock after a night of violence in which dozens of masked men stormed a train station. The men, suspected of belonging to gangs, were wearing white T-shirts and assaulted pro-democracy protesters and passers-by from the Yueng Long area.

Despite several weeks of demonstrations, this is the first time this type of violence has happened. Several Hong Kong lawyers question why police took so long to reach the scene, the BBC reports .
