Venezuela secretly exported tons of gold to Africa, says Wall Street Journal

According to the WSJ, these operations help Nicolás Maduro evade sanctions and remain in power.

Nicolás Maduro's government is selling off its gold reserves as part of a secret operation in East Africa in order to evade US-imposed sanctions, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday (June 18).

According to the newspaper, on two early-March flights alone, 7.4 tons of gold - with a market value of over $300 million (R$1.2 billion) - were transferred from Venezuela to a refinery in Uganda.
