Supreme decides: Lula can be released at any time

By six votes to five, the judges ordered the arrest only after res judicata, a ruling which favors the former president. Lawyers have already asked for his release. However, for now, the politician will not have the possibility to apply for public office.

The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil (STF), with a tight but already expected result of six votes in favor and five against, voted for the arrest of convicts only after the res judicata and not right after the decision of the second instance, which will result in the freedom of Lula da Silva.

For now, however, the details of how and when the former president, arrested since April of 2018 in Curitiba, for the possession of a triple apartment on a beach in the state of São Paulo, as part of Operation Lava Jato, will not be known yet, but his defense has already filed for release in the next few hours.

Lula's girlfriend, sociologist Rosangela da Silva, is also confident that the former President of Brazil will be able to leave at any moment and already plans to pick him up in the next few hours.
