Pope names anti-pedophile czar to investigate new allegations of abuse

Charles Scicluna led an investigation that culminated in a priest's imprisonment.

Accompanied by a new wave of allegations of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, Pope Francis decided to appoint one of the most respected jurists to address the problem for a key Vatican post.

Born in Canada and current archbishop of Malta, Charles Jude Scicluna, 59, is the new assistant secretary of the CDF (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith), responsible for ensuring the doctrinal purity of Catholicism - and for punishing pedophile priests or other offenses of a sexual nature.
