Over 70 million displaced people in the world, the highest number ever

This is the seventh year in a row that the number of displaced people in the world has increased. Venezuela, which is facing a serious humanitarian and political crisis, is for the first time the country with the largest number of new asylum seekers.

A new record was broken in 2018, with 70.8 million people displaced from their homes or their countries due to wars or persecution, the UN announced this Wednesday.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) 'Global Trends' report notes that displacement levels are now twice as high as they were 20 years ago, confirming a growing trend in the number of people in need of international protection.
