This is a "rare phenomenon", a Mediterranean cyclone, says the Athens Observatory.
Greece is on high alert for the possibility of being hit by a tropical cyclone, at a time when strong gusts of wind continue to blow through the territory, prompting authorities to close schools and ports. The orange alert includes the areas of Athens, the Aegean islands and the center and east of the Peloponnese.
The Athens Observatory, quoted by the AFP news agency, warns of the possibility of the occurrence of "a rare phenomenon in Greece, a 'medicane' (junction of the words 'mediterranean' and 'hurricane'), or Mediterranean cyclone", which will begin in the Ionian Sea and head to the southeast of the Greek mainland.
