Maputo-Katembe Bridge plunged into darkness due to cable robbery

The Maputo-Katembe bridge, between the two shores of the Mozambican capital's bay, had no light for several hours between Monday night and today's early morning hours due to the theft of cables from the project's electrical system.

Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) spokesman, Luís Amado, told state broadcaster Radio Mozambique that strangers stole medium voltage cables that supply the lights of the bridge, leaving the infrastructure in the dark.

Luís Amado said that the robbery caused damages evaluated in a million meticais, but the light was restored by EDM technicians. The spokesman for the public power company deplored the situation, warning of the risks to drivers who had to cross the bridge in a scenario of complete darkness.
