A group armed with machetes invaded the village of Manilha, on Thursday night, and beheaded the village chief, killed two other inhabitants and burned six houses
The sources said that the group, which was armed with machetes, burned six houses during the raid. The decapitated victim was a traditional leader from the village.
The attack was the first that targeted Manilha, but a nearby village, Chitolo, had already been targeted by armed groups.
The village hit by the incursion of the armed group is located 20 kilometers from the village of Mocímboa da Praia, in the province of Cabo Delgado.
Several districts in Cabo Delgado have been swept by a wave of violence that began after an armed attack on the police stations in Mocímboa da Praia, in October, 2017.
After Mocímboa da Praia, there have been dozens of attacks that are suspected to be connected to the same type of group, always far from the roads.
The attacks have been carried out outside the construction area of the plants and other infrastructures belonging to the oil companies that will be exploring natural gas on the peninsula of Afungi, Palma district, and whose works are progressing normally.
At the end of last month, the Mozambican Public Prosecutor's Office (PP) added 5 more names to the list of about 200 people that are on trial accused of being involved in the armed attacks that took place in Cabo Delgado.
