The total number of regularized foreigners increased threefold from 2017 to 2018.

The number of illegal aliens who were able to get legalized in Portugal last year increased by 385% compared to 2017. 16,500 residence permits were issued, as against 3,403 in the previous year.

However, the exact figures segmented by nationality have not yet been disclosed. "These data already reflect the effort that the Foreigners and Borders Service has been making in the regularization of immigrants who are integrated into the Portuguese labor market," the institution said in a statement.
