The former American Cardinal McCarrick becomes the highest figure of the Catholic Church to be expelled in modern times.

The former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick has been defrocked by the Catholic Church after he was accused of sexual abuse of minors and seminarians, the Vatican said on Saturday.

McCarrick, which in July became the first prelate of the Catholic Church, in about a hundred years, to lose his title as a cardinal, is now the highest figure of the Church to be defrocked in modern times.
