The National Water Agency (ANA) has detected, over the last three years, infrastructure problems in a total of 54 of the country's water dams. This volume is equivalent to more than half of the total 104 dams that the agency monitors. The information was verified by the "Estado" last December, in a survey carried out with the agency, by means of the Access to Information Act (LAI).

Today, according to ANA, there are only six staff members in the entire country carrying out this inspection work. The dams inspected by ANA are categorized as "multiple use", i.e., are used for energy generation, human consumption and navigation. They are different from ore tailings dams, which are the responsibility of the National Mining Agency.
