During a hearing in the Chamber of Deputies on Monday 16, the Minister for Women, Family and Human Rights, Damares Alves, said that within her "Christian view", women should be submissive to men in marriage.
"In the church, we understand that in the marriage between man and woman, the man is the leader," said the minister. "That does not make me any less capable of running this ministry. It does not make me more incompetent. It is a question of faith within my segment", she added.
Damares's speech, during a Hearing of the Women's Rights Committee, came after a questioning by Federal Rep. Alice Portugal (Brazilian Communist Party), who asked the minister's position on the flexibilization of possession of firearms, making reference to the decree signed by President Jair Bolsonaro in January.
