Canadians queue up to buy cannabis

Canada is the second country in the world to legalize the drug.

Starting this Wednesday, it will be legal to use cannabis for recreational purposes in Canada - a historic new law celebrated throughout the country by consumers who faced long queues in the cold to buy marijuana.

In Saint-Jean-de-Terre-Neuve, eastern Canada, from midnight onwards (3 am in Lisbon), dozens of people faced the cold for several hours to buy the first few grams of cannabis.

One of these people, Ian Power, arrived four hours before the symbolic opening of the store in order to "become a part of history." "My dream was to become the first person to buy the first legal gram of cannabis," he told reporters.

Three years after its election, Justin Trudeau' s liberal government is delivering one of its most symbolic campaign promises: making Canada the second country in the world (after Uruguay in 2013) to legalize recreational cannabis.
