Portuguese MEP Ana Gomes said today that last year's political tension in Timor-Leste has led to a "destruction of wealth", putting at risk the life of the population and the international image of the country.
"During the last year, we witnessed the destruction of the national wealth, a big decline of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). This is not due to bad governance, but to lack of governance, because the democratic process was full of blockades", said the socialist deputy at a conference about democracy in Dili.
Ana Gomes considered that the impact of this situation could affect the external image of East Timor and condition future support to the country.
