Female black scientist Katherine Johnson is much more than the human computer who helped Man reach the moon. The NASA researcher, who celebrated her 100th birthday this Sunday, has proven that education is one of the most powerful weapons against racial and gender discrimination.

At a time when there were no computers and all scientific calculations were done by hand, Katherine Johnson played a key role in the US space program, at the peak of the Cold War,when the United States was engaged in the space race with the Soviet Union.
