NASA will use the Capelinhos volcano to train exploration on Mars

In the next expedition to the Capelinhos volcano, scientists will look at the landscape both by land and air, using drones, in preparation for the next phase of exploration of the red planet.

NASA will use the Capelinhos volcano in the Azores to train for the exploration of the landscape of Mars and see how it has evolved over the last few million years, the former director of the scientific department of the US space agency told Lusa.

The expedition, which has yet to be scheduled but will happen soon, will lead scientists from NASA, UK and Portugal to study the Faial Island volcano which was born from the sea in the late 1950s under very similar conditions of those that existed on Mars "a billion years ago."
