'Ghost population' of humans lived 500,000 years ago

A previously unknown human species may have existed about 500,000 years ago.

Scientists estimate that this 'ghost population' lived in Africa 360,000 years to 1 million years ago, and that it is possible to locate traces of their genes in modern-day people.

Evidence for these unknown humans was found when researchers were studying the genetic fingerprint of populations in West Africa and found that more than 20% of their DNA seems to derive from a missing genetic group.
