New cardinal is one of the 66 that Francisco nominated and one of the three Portuguese with voting rights at the College of Cardinals.
José Tolentino de Mendonça takes office this afternoon in the Vatican, as a cardinal, bringing to five (though only three of them vote) the number of Portuguese cardinals who are part of the College of Cardinals, the most important entity of the Catholic Church, responsible for the election of the next pope. With Tolentino in the Consistory, 12 more cardinals from different countries will be elected. In total there are already 66 Cardinals chosen by Pope Francis.
