European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday she had purposely chosen the African Union (AU) for her first foreign trip to send a "strong message" to this international partner.

"I purposely chose the African Union as a destination" for the first trip outside the European bloc, Von der Leyen said at a press conference following the first meeting of the new college of commissioners.

The president of the European Commission also said she wanted to "send a strong message to the AU."

Ursula von der Leyen travels to Ethiopia from Friday to Sunday, having scheduled meetings in Addis Ababa with Moussa Faki as representative of the organization, with Ethiopian Prime Minister and Nobel Peace recipient, Abiy Ahmed and President Sahle-Work Zewde, the only woman who is head of state in an African country.
