Venezuela's deeply divided political groups held parallel celebrations on Venezuela's Independence Day on Friday. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro asked for dialogue and opposition leader Juan Guaidó denounced alleged human rights violations during what he calls as "dictatorship" of Maduro.
Speaking to several of the country's top military officials, Maduro reiterated support for a mediated negotiation process by Norway between his socialist government and Guaido, the opposition-led National Assembly leader, who claims that Maduro's re-election in 2018 was a fraud.
