Arrested in April 2018, the former president benefited from a Supreme Court ruling on the imprisonment of convicts after the second appeal.
Federal judge Danilo Pereira Junior has ordered today (Nov 8) the immediate release of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who spent the last 19 months in jail.
The decision, which was announced at 4.15 pm, comes after yesterday's Federal Supreme Court ruling the Constitution forbids imprisonment until a defendant has exhausted all appeals - which is not Lula's case. As we write, Lula has not yet left the Federal Police building in Curitiba where he has been detained since April 7, 2018. PT party members and Lula supporters have spent the day outside the Federal Police headquarters waiting for the former president to be released.
