General Hugo Carvajal, a former military intelligence director during the Venezuelan regime of Hugo Chávez, was arrested on Friday in Madrid at the request of the United States.
He is formally charged with drug trafficking, but US officials believe he could provide strategic information on the current dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro. According to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity to Reuters, Carvajal is the person outside the country with the greatest knowledge of the regime and willing to cooperate - a desire he would have already expressed publicly.
