US to ramp up pressure on Maduro's "illegitimate" government

The US refuses to recognize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's legitimacy as he takes office for a second term.

According to National Security Adviser John Bolton, the US has vowed to ramp up pressure on the Venezuelan president.

"The US will not recognize the Maduro dictatorship's illegitimate inauguration. We will continue to increase pressure on the corrupt regime, support the democratic National Assembly, and call for democracy and freedom in Venezuela," Bolton wrote on Twitter.

Maduro, who won the May 20 elections - boycotted by the opposition -, will now begin a new six-year term.

The European Union and the Lima Group, which since 2017 includes several Latin American countries and Canada, have also announced that they will not recognize the Venezuelan president's second term.
