The EU warns Italy about joining China's "New Silk Road"

The possibility of Italy joining the "New Silk Road," a project promoted by China, has raised alarm in the European Union, which said that Member States "must remember" the common rules of the group.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has confirmed that he will sign a memorandum of understanding on the so-called "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI), during the visit to Rome of Chinese President Xi Jinping between March 21 and 24.

The $1 trillion project proposes the creation of an extensive communications network to boost international connectivity and foster the digital economy, as well as significant Chinese investments to the infrastructure of countries joining the initiative.
