At the end of his mandate, President Michel Temer stepped back and decided to grant a Christmas pardon.
Temer will grant the benefit to prisoners even without the Federal Supreme Court (STF) having concluded a ruling on last year's decree, challenged by the Attorney General's Office (PGR).
The State column found out that the president decided to comply with the request made by the acting public defender, Jair Soares Júnior, who requested that the pardon decree would be edited for this year. The tendency of the president is to leave out those who committed crimes against the public administration.
"If no pardon decree is issued in 2018 this will be the first year, since the enactment of the Federal Constitution of 1988, in which no pardon is granted as a criminal policy that aims to combat mass incarceration," wrote Jair Soares Júnior in a letter sent to the Planalto Palace on Tuesday (25).
