Relationship between Portugal and Macau is "on a level of excellence"

During the visit of the Macau Chief Executive to Portugal, agreements were signed in the areas of judicial cooperation, higher education and tourism. For the Macanese ruler, it is important to diversify the economy of the territory and lists, among others, the financial, telecommunications and technology sectors.

Relations between Portugal and the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) are at a "level of excellence" and the strengthening of cooperation in several areas is foreseen, Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva said on Wednesday in Lisbon, at the end of the sixth meeting of the Macau-Portugal Joint Committee, which he co-chaired with Fernando Chui Sai On, the Chief Executive of this region of the People's Republic of China.

An example of the good level of bilateral cooperation is given by the agreements signed in the areas of Justice, Science and Higher Education and Tourism, which resulted from the visit to Portugal of Chui Sai On. He, in turn, highlighted the importance of Macau as a platform in the relation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries through the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation, created in 2003.

Since its creation, the value of trade between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries has increased "13 times," stressed the Macanese ruler while the Luso-Chinese exchanges were multiplied by three.

Chui Sai On recalled that the visits made by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Portugal and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to China highlighted the "deepening of the global strategic partnership" between the two countries.
