A target of relentless PT attacks for more than two decades, former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB) said, in an interview to Estado, that he does not accept "moral coercion" from those who are now seeking his support.
"When you see what has been said about my government, nothing is good. But everything they've done is good. The one who invented the "us" and the "them" was the PT. I never got in that wave. " According to him, "now the PT wants to collect... they say we have to (support Haddad). Why do we have to support him automatically? When did the PT automatically support someone? Only in vice versa. With what moral authority can PT say: either you support me or you're right-wing? Think a bit. The story is already given, mine at least."
And he continued: "Now is the time for moral coercion... Ah, go to hell. I do not need to be coerced morally by anyone. I am not selling my soul to the devil." Despite this, he says that "there is a door" with Fernando Haddad (PT), but with the "other (Jair Bolsonaro, PSL)", there is none.
How do you see the future of PSDB and evaluate this conservative wave?
If PSDB wants to have a future, it needs to rethink itself. After an earthquake, you need to rebuild the house. The conservative wave is something that is happening all around the globe.
PSDB identifies more with whom in this second round?
From what I've seen from polls, it's almost half-way from the point of view of the electorate. In six states, PSDB still disputed the governor's election. Candidates are looking at the electorate. From my personal point of view, Bolsonaro represents everything I do not like. I only heard Bolsonaro's voice now. I had never heard it. I do not think people vote in him because of what he says or what he thinks. The vote is anti-PT (Workers' Party). The electorate seems to be against the Workers' Party. In the eyes of a good part of Brazil's people, PT is responsible for what happened, the economy, complicity with corruption and so on. It is possible that most of the PSDB leaders are pro-Bolsonaro, but that is not my case.
You fell closer to Haddad?
I cannot say that. A person is one thing, a party is another. The proposal that the PT represents has not changed at all. When it comes to economics, it is the new economic matrix. Encouraging the economy? Okay, but how do we do it without investment? How do we do it without facing the tax issue? The PT in power has always suffered from a deterioration of (António) Gramsci's vision of hegemony. It is not cultural, it is a hegemony of the effective command. When you see what has been said about my government, nothing is good. But everything they've done is good. The one who invented the "us" and the "them" was the PT. I never got into that wave. Now the Workers' Party wants to collect... they say we have to (support it). Why do we have to support it automatically? It's debatable. The Workers' Party doesn't make any self-reflection. The things they say about my government do not match the things I think I've done. Why do I have to support PT in order to avoid the greater evil? I think we must avoid the greater evil by defending democracy, human rights, freedom, standing against racism all the time.
