Defense and safety are priorities in cooperation between Mozambique and Russia

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi is on an official visit to Russia until Friday.

Mozambique wants to strengthen the cooperation with Russia, and defense and security are the priorities, Mozambican Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Lucas, said today.

"The purpose of the visit [of the Mozambican President to Russia] is to reinforce the existing - and historic - relations and we also want to see the cooperation part in all sectors, especially in the area of defense and safety," said Maria Lucas, cited by Television of Mozambique.

The Mozambican Deputy Minister was speaking in Moscow as part of the working visit by the Mozambican head of state Filipe Nyusi to Russia, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, that began today.

In addition to cooperation in defense and security, Maria Lucas highlighted the interest in boosting trade relations between the two states.

"They [the Russians] are opening up to the African market and I am absolutely sure that Mozambique is a potential partner," added the Deputy Minister, noting the importance of the Mozambique-Russia Business Forum, which will take place on Wednesday.

The official also said that Mozambique is also interested in cooperating with Russia in the gas and oil sector, taking into account Moscow's experience as one of the world's largest producers.

The visit, which ends on Friday, also includes official conversations between Filipe Nyusi and Vladimir Putin, as well as meetings with the Mozambican community in that country (Russia).
