Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to meet with the Dalai Lama during his visit to India in 2014, but New Delhi, concerned about its relations with China, did not let it happen, a book released today reveals.
The 83-year-old Buddhist monk has been living in India since he fled from the Tibetan capital Lhasa in 1959. This has been a thorny issue for Beijing since then.
"In 2014, when Chinese President Xi Jingping visited Delhi to meet with Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi, I asked to meet with him," the Dalai Lama says in Sonia Singh's book. "President Xi Jinping agreed, but the Indian government was cautious about the meeting, so it did not happen," he adds.
