Today, Augusto Heleno, a future defense minister under Jair Bolsonaro's (PSL) government, supported the controversial proposal by Rio de Janeiro governor-elect Wilson Witzel (PSC) to use snipers to contain criminals who carry armaments of restricted use.
The retired general said he had already used the same "rule of engagement" in military parlance while working in Haiti and that it is not an authorization to kill indiscriminately. The statements were made today (31) in an exclusive interview with Radio Nacional, Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC).
"My rule of engagement in Haiti was very similar to the one the future governor put in place. It's obvious that a lot of people distort this and end up saying it's a warrant to kill. It is a necessary reaction to the ostensible exhibition that has been made in Rio de Janeiro of weapons of war, often in the hands of young people," he said.
