Lula da Silva spent his first few minutes of freedom addressing the crowd and thanking all those who supported him during his more than 500 days in prison.
It took Lula da Silva just over five minutes to walk from the Federal Police prison in Curitiba to the crowd awaiting him outside. Many people wanted to hear the former Brazilian president's first words.
"Dear friends, you can't imagine what it means for me to be here with you. I've been talking to the Brazilian people all my life, but I never thought I would be here today talking to men and women who stood here for 580 days shouting "Good morning Lula," "Good afternoon Lula" and "Good night Lula," come rain or shine," said Lula da Silva.
