The European Commission said on Tuesday (the 27th) that it is considering applying new sanctions against Russia due to the seizure of three ships and the arrest of 23 Ukrainian sailors and military personnel last Sunday (the 25th).

The EU's executive branch spokesman also called on all sides to exercise "maximum restraint" after the incidents in the Sea of Azov, which opened a further escalation of tension between Moscow and Kiev.

According to the European Commission, "there is a work going on to evaluate the possibility of new sanctions" due to Russia's pressure on Ukraine.

Last Sunday, Russian authorities intercepted a Yana Kapu tugboat, and two Ukrainian gunners, Berdiansk and Nikopol, in the Sea of Azov, which is connected to the Black Sea by the Kerch Strait.
