The "yellow vests" have been protesting against the rise of taxes on fuels, blocking roads and petrol stations. Macron reacted for the first time.

On an official visit to Belgium, Macron said it was "normal" for protests to happen, and argued that the government intended to "tax more the fossil fuels" as a way to "support the poor"

."It is through dialogue that one can find an outlet and the solutions on the ground", stated the French President, in his first reaction since the beginning of this protest movement.

In his turn, the prime minister, Edouard Philippe, said to his deputies of the La République en Marche Party (LREM), which is currently in power, that "We will win by being coherent, consistent and determined", according to one of the participants at a party's meeting, reported the France-Presse agency.

Today, at the start of the day, the Interior Minister, Christophe Castaner, denounced the "total drift" of the demonstrations and regretted the "radicalization" and the "very, very large number of victims"
