The Chinese president said on Friday day that China will never tolerate outside interference in its semi-autonomous regions at a time when the anniversary of Macau's transition coincides with a serious political crisis in Hong Kong.

"I want to stress here that after the return to the homeland of Hong Kong and Macau, the affairs of these two special administrative regions are entirely domestic affairs of China," said Xi Jinping during the inauguration of Macau's new chief executive, Ho Iat Seng.

"The government and people of China are standing like a rock in their determination to defend the sovereignty, security and development interests of the country," he said during the speech.

In addition to the first chief executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region, Edmundo Ho, the outgoing head of government, Chui Sai-on, and Ho Iat Seng, who took office on Friday, Carrie Lam, the leader of Hong Kong, who is going through her worst political crisis since the handover of UK sovereignty to China sat in the front row.
