The British consulate official in Hong Kong who was detained in the Chinese city of Shenzhen was released today, a police source stated. The Shenzhen police indicated that Simon Cheng Man-kit was released after 15 days of administrative detention.
The official's family reported that Simon Cheng Man-kit has already returned to Hong Kong. Cheng was arrested for violating Chinese law and 'confessed his illegal acts', authorities said in a statement, without providing further details.
On Friday, Chinese state media reported that the British diplomatic official in Hong Kong, who had disappeared in mainland China on August 8th, had been arrested for 'soliciting prostitutes', a charge immediately rejected by the young man's family.
The family said Cheng went to Shenzhen on Aug. 8th for a business meeting, but then was unreachable after crossing the border into Hong Kong.
