Introduction of 5G in Brazil postponed until 2021/2022

The introduction in Brazil of 5G mobile communications technology should occur at the end of 2021 or early in 2022, according to a projection from the Minister of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications, Marcos Pontes, quoted by the Brazilian press.

The minister said that the main problem for the introduction of 5G in the country is due to the risk of interference at a frequency of 3.5 GHz, which is used in Brazil for transmission of free-view television via satellite dish antenna.

"For this reason, we should only move to the new technology when there is a strategy to solve the problem, or at least to mitigate it," the minister said in an interview with daily newspaper Folha de São Paulo and with UOL.

The initial forecast was to carry out the 5G auction in March this year, but this step was delayed and should now happen in the second half of 2020, with the possibility of being delayed until 2021.
