Growing unease in EU around trade agreement with Mercosur

The announced "imminent" trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur, negotiated since 1999, has concerned European farmers, increasing pressure on their governments and environmental NGOs.

Leaders of France, Poland, Ireland and Belgium expressed fears about the impact of the agreement on agriculture in a letter to European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker.

"The end of the Mercosur negotiations should not mean the end of the EU's agricultural production model,"the head of the main European agricultural association, COPA-Cogeca, Pekka Pesonen wrote in a letter to Juncker.
