Economists say that explaining the downturn in Brazil's savings is not a simple task. Logically, with the population growth - and the total number of citizens in economically active age - the rate should have increased significantly, according to Samuel Pessoa, an economist and researcher at Ibre-FGV. However, the economist says that Brazil squandered the "demographic bonus" and saw its savings fall by a third since the 1970 's. At the time, the Brazilian reserve rate was around 23%; today, it is below 15%.
