Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos was unanimously re-elected to the new board of directors of Angolan telecommunications operator Unitel
Re-elected today at the general meeting as a member of the board of directors for the 2018/20 triennium, Isabel dos Santos did not provide further details; the new members will now choose the president in their first meeting after taking office, which must happen until May 6.
The businesswoman, who did not attend the mobile phone company's general meeting, said that today's assembly was positive.
"The result was balanced and there was consensus among shareholders (...) Isabel dos Santos remains on the board of directors for the 2018/20 term," she said.
The Angolan businesswoman also mentioned Unitel's new Director-General, Portuguese national Miguel Geraldes, who will join the company after representing China's Huawei in South Africa and serving as Managing Director of MTC Namibia (the Namibian telecommunications operator) for nine years.
"The new Director-General is expected to arrive in June and has the experience of managing the Namibian operator, which boasts about one million customers," she pointed out.
Isabel dos Santos then took to Instagram to say that "being a businesswoman is my passion" and that she will continue "investing in Angolans."
"It is my mission to position and further improve Unitel, a leading telecommunications company in Angola. That is why I remain on the Board of Directors for the 2018/20 term, as decided today in the general meeting," her post reads.
"A valuable lesson I have learned in life is that we should always follow our passion. After all, only our passions can move us and give us energy for a day's work. We should not be discouraged when we are told that our dreams will not lead us anywhere. Passion and hard work is a powerful combination, no matter our area of expertise. We must always have the motivation to make a difference. When we are motivated by this power, this is bigger than any financial gain," Isabel dos Santos.
Isabel dos Santos was unanimously re-elected today as a member of the board of directors of Angolan telecommunications operator Unitel, for the 2018/20 period, following the company's general meeting. The day-long meeting was held in Talatona, southern Luanda, and was attended by representatives of the company's four shareholders.
In a press release, a spokesperson for Isabel dos Santos said that the new board of directors, which includes four other names (Amílcar Safeca, Miguel Geraldes, João Boa Quipipa, and Luiz Rosa) will take office until May 6, with the president being elected during the first meeting, in accordance with the law.
Unitel's board of directors is currently headed by businesswoman Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of former Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos.
Unitel's four shareholders are PT Ventures, Sonangol, Vidatel (controlled by Isabel dos Santos) and Geni, all with a 25% stake. General Leopoldino Fragoso do Nascimento (Geni Group, close to former Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos) is the chairman of the company's general meeting.
Today's press release makes no reference to the second item on the general meeting's schedule - the injunction filed by PT Ventures against the Angolan mobile telecommunications operator.
