Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa left a powerful message at the closing ceremony of the third Web Summit held in Portugal
"Using the digital revolution for dialogue, for peace, depends on you. That is the challenge. It is difficult, it is hard, because the wave which is sweeping the world will last, and it is the opposite of the digital revolution, the opposite of the meaning of the digital revolution," the Portuguese president said, alluding to the extremist movements currently taking over some countries.
"The digital world is all about freedom, open economies, opening up societies, and what we are seeing around the world is the opposite of this. We see xenophobia, intolerance, we see borders closing down."
