EDP designs power plants to turn Príncipe into clean energy island

Pilot project may also be replicated in Sao Tome.

Energias de Portugal (EDP) will invest four million euros in two power plants - solar and hydro - in Príncipe, eliminating any polluting energy production on the Sao Tome island, the world's biosphere reserve.

The objective is, "in the first phase, the construction of a solar plant and in a second phase, a mini-hydro system taking advantage of the water resources that exist on the island," Guilherme Pereira, director of EDP's international relations, told Lusa.
