Running is the best exercise for those who have a tendency to put on weight, study concludes

There is no use at blaming genetics. Even those who have a predisposition to gain weight can control their weight with diet and exercise.

But it is not any exercise: According to a recently published survey, some physical activity is better than others for people prone to obesity. Running and climbing, for example, are more effective than swimming and cycling. The discovery comes from a study of over 18,000 people conducted by the National University of Taiwan and published in the scientific journal PLOS Genetics.

The researchers collected information about the genetic code and exercise routine of participants, who are between 30 and 70 years old. Five measures of obesity were analyzed, including body mass index (BMI), fat percentage and the hip circumference.
