Painter Manuel Amado died in Lisbon at the age of 81 from cancer, a family source told Lusa.
Amado was born in Lisbon in 1938. Although he graduated in architecture, it was painting that seduced him from an early age. He started focusing exclusively on painting in 1987 - an effort to "perceive the invisible," as Paula Rego's House of Stories put it.
"It is as if he paints to eradicate a ghost, something he will never be able to do," Paula Rego said when she curated an Amado retrospective in 2016.
