"One of the largest and most important discoveries to have been announced in the past few years." This is how the Egyptian authorities announced that a "huge cache" of 20 sealed coffins had been found in the Luxor region.
The wooden sarcophagi, which are very well preserved, namely by the intact engravings and surviving coloration, remain "as the ancient Egyptians left them" in Al-Assasif, an ancient necropolis on the west bank of the Nile. The site was once part of the ancient city of Thebes, the ruins of which are found in present-day Luxor.
