"Mário": this is the story of a homosexual dancer during the "Estado Novo" regime

The show is inspired by the life of Valentim de Barros, who spent 40 years hospitalized in Miguel Bombarda. Premiere this Thursday at Cinema São Jorge

"Dad, I want to be a dancer." Mário is happy with his dream but, in the face of family misunderstandings, the pre-adolescent boy who does not want to be a mechanical locksmith like his father and grandfather, runs away from home in Cova do Vapor, crosses the river and starts living in Lisbon, near the harbor, with fishermen, varinas, seagulls, sailors, beggars and cats. That's where he learns to read and count, that's where he grows. Sometimes they tease him. "They call me Mario Larilas." (Larilas means gay) But he doesn't care.

Alone on the stage of room 2 of Cinema São Jorge, in Lisbon, actor Flávio Gil changes his clothes as Mário grows and changes his life. This is the story of a homosexual boy who, during the Estado Novo, was protected by priests and colonels and was the sexual object of important men, but who despite coming from a poor family managed to fulfill his dream of being a dancer. He danced for Balanchine at the Paris Opera, he was a dancer at the Ballet del Colon in Buenos Aires, and was part of the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. He was known in Lapa as Mariete. And he was happy.
