Paul McCartney: Lennon broke up the Beatles

Paul McCartney released a new album this month

Paul McCartney has a new album - Egypt Station, released on September 7 - and even though he is now 76 years old, the former Beatle explores all the media resources available to an artist of his standing.

Several McCartney interviews have surfaced in recent days. One of these interviews, with radio star Howard Stern in New York last week, was particularly significant because Paul McCartney categorically said that it was John Lennon who broke up the Beatles.

"I know who broke up the Beatles, it was John," McCartney said, surprising Stern, who had said no one knew who was to blame for the breakup. "I don't think anyone tried to pin it on anyone, it just came out that way. There was a meeting where John came in and said, 'Hey guys, I'm leaving the group.'"

Paul goes on to say: "John loved strong women. His mother had been a strong woman, his aunty, who brought him up, had been a strong woman... John had met up with Yoko, and even though we thought it was a bit intrusive, because she used to sit in on the recording sessions... but looking back now you think, the guy was totally in love with her. You just got to respect that."
